EMERALD APPLE. A popular mid-season beefsteak tomato variety developed in Russia in 2000 by specialists of JSC NPK “NK LTD” — V. L. Korochkin, V. A. Vasilevsky, A. V. Dynnik and A. V. Kochkin. The variety is valued primarily for its large fruits with an unusual emerald-green colour and excellent sweet flavour. The plant is indeterminate and vigorous, reaching approximately 1.2–1.8 m in height, so it requires staking and regular pruning of side shoots. The period from emergence to ripening is about 110–120 days. The fruits are round and flattened, with slight ribbing, usually weighing 200–300 g, while under favourable conditions some fruits can reach 400–650 g.
Even when fully ripe, the skin retains its rich emerald-green colour, sometimes developing subtle yellowish or bronze shades. The flesh also remains green, occasionally with pink streaks. It is juicy, tender and meaty, with relatively few seeds, giving the fruits a particularly pleasant texture. The flavour of Emerald Apple is sweet, delicate and well balanced, with a mild pleasant acidity and pronounced fruity notes. The flavour of ripe fruits is sometimes compared to that of kiwi. This is an excellent salad variety, ideal for fresh eating, vegetable salads, attractive slicing, sauces and unusual appetisers. Its distinctive green colour and large, meaty fruits make it an interesting addition both to an ordinary garden.
