KENNETH’S PIENNOLO, Italy–USA. A selection variety created based on the famous Piennolo del Vesuvio and refined by Kenneth Nilsson — a collaborator of the renowned breeder Fred Hempel. This work became a modern interpretation of the classic Italian type with improved characteristics adapted to broader growing conditions. The variety is indeterminate, early-ripening, reaching about 1.5 m in height in open ground. Plants have potato-type leaves, are sturdy, well-leafed, and form abundant clusters of small fruits.
Compared to the classic Piennolo del Vesuvio, Kenneth’s Piennolo forms somewhat larger and elongated fruits while retaining the characteristic density and sweetness. The tomatoes can be stored significantly longer than most small-fruited varieties without losing density, sweetness, or aroma. Thanks to this, they can be used both for fresh consumption and for storage, drying, and the traditional Italian method of storage in bunches. The combination of early ripeness, sugar content, dense flesh, and shelf life makes this variety one of the most successful among tomatoes of the "piennolo" type.
The bush looks vigorous and productive, consistently setting a large number of fruit clusters. Fruits weigh up to 25 g, are elongated, dense, and very firm in structure. The flesh is thick, meaty, with a high content of dry matter. The taste is rich, pronounced, and very sweet, with a concentrated tomato aroma characteristic of the best representatives of the "piennolo" type. This is exactly the variety where small size is fully compensated by flavor intensity. The exceptional shelf life of the fruits deserves special attention.
