MINIATURE CHOCOLATE BELL, MINI BELL CHOCOLATE. An early sweet pepper variety distinguished by its compact fruits with an unusual chocolate-brown color. Thanks to its abundant fruiting, the plant looks especially attractive when covered with numerous peppers. The fruits have a pleasant sweet flavor and juicy flesh, making them excellent for fresh consumption. Their small size makes them convenient for salads, vegetable slices, and various appetizers. The original dark color gives the harvest a particularly decorative appearance.
The peppers can also be used in hot dishes. They are well suited for baking, stewing, frying, and homemade preserves. The small fruits are convenient for whole-fruit canning or adding to mixed vegetable preparations. For cultivation, it is best to choose a sunny location with fertile soil. Regular watering, feeding, and timely care will help the plants develop well and produce an abundance of fruit. This variety will especially appeal to those who enjoy early, productive sweet peppers with an unusual color.
VARIETY HISTORY
An old American sweet pepper variety valued for its unusual chocolate-brown color and miniature bell-shaped fruits. The variety was discovered in the 1980s by gardener Lucina Cress in Ohio, USA. She was a member of Seed Savers Exchange, an organization dedicated to preserving heirloom plant varieties. According to one account of its origins, Lucina received seeds of miniature red and yellow peppers from an elderly neighbor.
The chocolate-colored variety appeared in her garden through natural plant variation. Lucina selected seeds from the most attractive small fruits and gradually stabilized the variety’s distinctive traits. In the 1980s, she shared the seeds through the Seed Savers Exchange catalog. Over time, Miniature Chocolate Bell spread among collectors and enthusiasts of rare pepper varieties in the United States and Europe.
