ROSII DE SIMIONESTI. A rare heirloom tomato variety from Romania, passed down through generations for its excellent flavor and easy-growing nature. It originates from the village of Simionesti, located in Bistrița-Năsăud County. This variety belongs to the family heirloom category and preserves the traditions of growing old-fashioned tomatoes. The plants are indeterminate and vigorous, with a long growing and fruiting period. The bushes can reach a height of 1.8–2 meters.
The fruits are large, beefsteak-type tomatoes with a rounded, flattened shape. They usually weigh 300–500 g, while under favorable growing conditions, some specimens can reach 800 g or more. The skin is a rich red color, while the dense flesh inside has dark pink or raspberry tones. These tomatoes look impressive and attract attention with their substantial size. Their meaty texture makes them especially appealing to lovers of large-fruited varieties.
The flavor is rich and sweet, with virtually no acidity and a pronounced aroma of traditional homegrown tomatoes. The flesh is thick, dense, and meaty while remaining juicy. The tomatoes are perfect for fresh summer salads and slicing. They can also be used to prepare thick juice, aromatic tomato paste, and rich sauces. Thanks to their combination of sweetness, juiciness, and an intense tomato aroma, this variety is an excellent choice for home cooking.
This is a mid-season variety with an extended fruiting period that can continue until the first autumn frosts. The tall, vigorous plants require sturdy supports, tying, and regular removal of side shoots. For easier maintenance, the plants are best trained to one or two stems. They should be grown in fertile soil, with plenty of sunlight and regular watering. With proper care, this variety will reward you with an abundant harvest of large, juicy, and sweet tomatoes.
