SLANKARD’S. This is a super-productive family tomato variety originating from the state of Michigan, USA. It has long gained popularity due to its reliability and abundant fruiting, which delights gardeners from the very first year of cultivation. Even under different weather conditions, the variety shows consistent results and demonstrates remarkable endurance. The plant is indeterminate, of medium vigor, reaching a height of 150–180 cm in open ground. It performs best when trained into two stems.
The stems are strong and sturdy, but the abundance of fruit sets and the weight of the tomatoes require reliable support and careful tying throughout the season. The ripening period is mid-season. From year to year, yields remain consistently high. The plants set fruits in large numbers, and their impressive size and weight always amaze. Over the years, the smallest fruits weighed about 400 grams, while individual giants exceeded one kilogram. In the current season, the heaviest fruit reached 1050 grams, confirming the outstanding potential of this variety.
FLAVOR AND PRODUCTIVITY
The fruits come in various shapes: they can be round, broad-shouldered, or sometimes heart-shaped with a distinctive “boat-like” silhouette. The skin is dense and fairly thick, which reliably protects the fruit from cracking. Inside, the tomatoes are very meaty, although due to the presence of cavities near the skin, they are not very juicy. Nevertheless, their flavor is exceptionally rich, with pronounced sweetness and a harmonious aftertaste that scores above five points on the tasting scale.
Each plant forms an impressive number of fruit sets. By mid-July, twenty-seven fruits in ten clusters had already been recorded on a single plant, all continuing to develop actively. This once again confirms the phenomenal productivity of the variety, which, combined with large fruit size, makes it a true treasure for tomato enthusiasts.
This variety is valued for its meaty texture, attractive appearance, and unique flavor. It is perfect for fresh consumption, for salads and slicing, as well as for preparing thick sauces and homemade ketchup. Even a single plant can provide a family with a generous harvest of large, beautiful fruits that never fail to impress and become the pride of the gardener.
