THORBURN'S TERRA COTTA. A unique collector's variety regarded as one of the most spectacular among large-fruited tomatoes. A 2026 addition to our collection, obtained from the USA. This variety has a fascinating history: it was first introduced in 1893 on the colorful cover of the J. M. Thorburn & Company seed catalog (New York). It impresses with its unusual terracotta coloration, large fruits, and outstanding fruity aroma. A mid-season indeterminate variety with vigorous plants reaching about 1.5 m in open ground. Plants produce sturdy trusses bearing 3–4 fruits, with an average weight of 400–500 g.
The fruits are large, beefsteak-type, flattened and ribbed, with broad shoulders and pronounced ridges. Their base color is rich terracotta, while the shoulders are covered with deep chocolate-ink anthocyanin, creating a striking contrast. The fruits are uniform, crack-resistant, free of hard green shoulders, and have excellent market appeal. When sliced, they reveal bright yellow flesh with vivid red rays extending from the center. Seed cavities are very small, containing few seeds, while most of the fruit consists of dense, juicy, meaty flesh.
FLAVOR
The flavor is rich, harmonious, and remarkably expressive. Intense fruity sweetness is balanced by a delicate acidity, creating a bright dessert-like taste. The flesh is aromatic, tender, and literally melts in your mouth, leaving a long, pleasant finish. Perfect for fresh salads, tastings, vegetable platters, and as a stunning centerpiece on the summer table. A rare historic variety with extraordinary coloration, magnificent beefsteak fruits, and outstanding flavor. A true treasure for collectors and lovers of unusual tomatoes.
