PERINO GROSSO. A mid-season, productive, and well-known tomato variety from Italy, cherished by growers for its stability and high fruit quality. The plants are indeterminate, sturdy, reaching 1.4-1.6 m in height, with a strong root system and good foliage coverage that protects the fruits from sunscald. The fruits are bright red, large, elongated, shaped like a big plum with a distinctive pointed tip. Average fruit weight is 180-300 g, though some can grow even larger.
The flesh is very dense and meaty, almost without cavities, containing few seeds. Thanks to their firm texture, the fruits keep their shape perfectly both fresh and after cooking. The flavor is rich and harmonious, with a perfect balance of natural sweetness and light refreshing acidity. Depending on the season, the flavor profile may vary: online sources often describe it as “very sweet,” but in our experience this year it was more of an ideally balanced sweet-and-sour — not cloying, yet not overly acidic.
We are confident this tomato easily deserves 5 out of 5 points on the tasting scale. It has a universal use: excellent for fresh eating, salads, whole-fruit canning, thick sauces, pasta, and other culinary dishes. The fruits do not crack, have excellent keeping quality and transportability, making the variety suitable for both home use and commercial sales.
