RED TOPPED GEM. An exceptionally rare collector's variety, most likely of Russian origin, preserved by enthusiasts through the exchange of small quantities of seed. A mid-season, highly productive tomato with an unusual tricolor fruit coloration resembling a precious gemstone. It combines outstanding ornamental appeal, exceptional vigor, and remarkable flavor. The plant is indeterminate, vigorous, and fast-growing, with excellent resistance to the major tomato diseases. It sets fruit continuously throughout the season until the first frost.
The trusses are simple, bearing 5-7 fruits each. Tomatoes are round, uniform, weighing 120-150 g, with an excellent market appearance. The base color is golden yellow, gradually developing an orange blush, while at full maturity the blossom end acquires a distinctive pinkish-red tint. Inside, the flesh is beautifully bicolored—bright yellow with a pink-red marbled center. Toward the end of the season, the fruits develop their richest coloration and highest sugar content. A versatile variety, perfect for fresh eating, salads, and decorative vegetable platters.
FLAVOR
The flesh is very juicy, tender, and meaty, with a rich fruity aroma that becomes especially intense when the fruit is cut. The flavor is harmonious and sweet, with very little acidity, while in the second half of the season the sweetness becomes almost honey-like. Because of its exceptionally high natural sugar content, fully overripe fruits may crack, a characteristic shared by many of the sweetest tomato varieties. Its extraordinary sweetness, exotic tricolor appearance, and rich fruity aroma make Red Topped Gem a true treasure for collectors and gourmet gardeners.
