GIANT SWORD (SPADONE GIGANTE). An impressive large-fruited Italian heirloom that is rightfully considered one of the most spectacular giants among collectible tomatoes. It combines record-breaking fruit size, exceptionally high productivity, and a rich classic tomato flavor. A true treasure for enthusiasts of traditional Italian varieties. Mid-season indeterminate variety. The plant is vigorous, strong, broad, and spreading, reaching about 2.0 m (6.5 ft) in open ground. Thick stems easily support heavy crops, although reliable staking is recommended due to the enormous weight of the fruits.
The best results are achieved when grown with 1–2 stems, although it can also be trained to 3 stems. In that case, the plant produces more fruits, but their average weight is slightly lower. Each truss bears 3–4 tomatoes weighing 650–900 g, while individual fruits may grow even larger. Overall productivity significantly exceeds that of most other large-fruited varieties. The fruits are deep red, enormous, strongly ribbed, and remarkably shaped, combining features of a plum, a rooster's comb, and traditional ribbed Italian tomatoes. Deep folds and pronounced ribs around the stem make every fruit completely unique.
The skin is firm with a slightly matte finish, protecting the fruits from damage and providing above-average storage quality. Seed cavities are small, with very few seeds, leaving most of the fruit filled with dense, meaty flesh. This versatile variety is especially valued for processing. Thanks to its high dry matter content, it produces thick, flavorful juices, sauces, and ketchup. The spectacular fruits are also excellent for fresh salads and impressive table presentation. Large Italian heirloom tomatoes are renowned for their dense flesh and rich flavor, and Giant Sword is one of the finest representatives of this group.
FLAVOR
The flesh is extremely dense, meaty, tender, with very little juice and almost no seeds. The flavor is rich, balanced, pleasantly sweet, and virtually free of acidity. It offers the classic "tomato from childhood" taste so highly appreciated by lovers of heirloom varieties. The combination of enormous fruits, dense aromatic flesh, and outstanding flavor makes Giant Sword one of the best varieties for fresh eating and homemade processing.
