DRAPÉE. Unofficially nicknamed “Drapée” by growers due to its unique, fabric-like folded appearance. However, this name is not officially registered. The plant produces deeply wrinkled fruits with pronounced folds across the surface. The fruits grow in clusters of 4 to 6. The skin is cream-yellow, occasionally with a slight golden hue, thin yet durable. The fruits have an unusual, pepper-like shape that makes them memorable.
Each fruit weighs between 120 and 300 grams. The flesh is yellow, relatively dry, and notably hollow inside. There is very little gel and few seeds. Thanks to the firm and structured flesh, the fruits are excellent for making sauces, baking, and stuffing. When cooked, they retain their shape and develop a rich, slightly sweet flavor.
VARIETY HISTORY
The exact origin of the variety remains uncertain, but it is believed to have Italian roots. It was stabilized by Pascal Moreau, who received seeds for authenticity testing from Franciska Faasse. Franciska had received them from a friend of Italian descent. Thus, the variety’s history is both mysterious and intriguing. The variety is valued for its ornamental look, unique shape, and excellent culinary and processing qualities. Perfect for gourmets and those seeking creative options in home cooking and preserving.
