DUCKLING (UTENOK). An early-maturing, compact, determinate Ukrainian variety developed specifically for open-field cultivation and regions with unstable weather conditions. The plant is standard-type, very compact, reaching only 40-50 cm in height, forming a sturdy bush that does not overgrow and requires no pruning or suckering. Due to its early maturity (100-105 days), the variety manages to produce its entire crop before cold weather or late blight pressure increases. The fruits are bright orange, smooth, round, with a characteristic “beak,” which gives them an attractive and easily recognizable appearance.
Average fruit weight is 70-90 g. The flesh is dense yet tender and juicy, with a rich sweet flavor and an increased content of sugars and beta-carotene. The variety is excellent for children’s and dietary nutrition and is recommended as a health-supportive product rich in natural antioxidants. It shows strong resistance to diseases — especially fusarium, late blight, and temperature fluctuations. Duckling is valued for its reliable fruiting in any weather, uniform ripening, and the ability to maintain high fruit quality throughout the whole season.
AGRONOMY
Sow seeds for seedlings in late March — early April. Transplant once the first true leaf appears. Plant outdoors in late May — early June after the danger of frost has passed. The plants do not require suckering or shaping, making cultivation very easy. Marketable yield reaches up to 2.2 kg/m². The variety is suitable for home gardens as well as small farms. The fruits have universal use: excellent for whole-fruit canning, pickling, fresh salads, children’s meals, and dietary dishes. Thanks to their attractive shape and dense yet juicy flesh, the fruits keep their appearance well even after heat processing.
