MONSTRUEUSE DE LYON. Is a tall, vigorous heirloom tomato variety known for its stable yields and mid-to-late season maturity. The plant is indeterminate, with regular foliage, and reaches a height of 1.5 to 1.7 meters in open ground. Its growing period is approximately 80-85 days from transplanting. The fruits are large, weighing between 300 to 400 grams (sometimes as low as 200 g), of the beefsteak type. They are round in shape, with pronounced ribbing at the top and slightly flattened shoulders. Skin color is deep red. The flesh is thick and meaty, almost solid, with small seed cavities containing minimal gel and seeds.
The flavor is balanced — sweet and tangy with a rich tomato aroma, characteristic of traditional heirloom varieties. It is known for high productivity and consistent fruiting throughout the season. Thanks to its rich flavor and dense texture, it is ideal for fresh eating, sauces, juices, and preserves. This is a rare but valuable variety that was widely cultivated in the 1950s-60s in the Lyon region of France. Today, it is considered a collector’s tomato, being revived for its outstanding taste and agronomic qualities.
