NEW BIG DWARF. One of the well-known old dwarf tomato varieties, producing large beefsteak-type fruits. The variety was introduced by the American seed company Isbell's Seed Company in 1909. It is considered one of the early representatives of dwarf large-fruited tomatoes and has particular historical importance in the development of modern amateur breeding. Similar old varieties later became an important part of the background for the international DT Project. This is a productive, mid-early variety with a compact plant growing up to 1 m tall. It is well suited to cultivation outdoors as well as under plastic covers. The plant develops a strong, sturdy bush and can produce a steady crop throughout the season.
The fruits are large, flattened-round, slightly compressed, and may sometimes have light ribbing around the stem end. They are beefsteak type, turning a rich raspberry color when fully ripe. The fruits are fleshy, with relatively few seeds, and usually weigh around 200–300 g. The flesh is dense, juicy and very meaty, with a pleasant sweet flavor and a pronounced tomato aroma. The fruits are excellent for fresh eating, salads and slicing, as well as for homemade tomato juice, sauces and various preserves. New Big Dwarf combines a compact plant, large meaty fruits, good productivity and excellent flavor, making it suitable both for regular cultivation and for collections of historic tomato varieties.
