ROSE D’EAUZE. A rare and fascinating heirloom tomato variety, passed down through generations. For about a hundred years, it was cultivated by a French family in the Gers region, an area renowned for its agricultural traditions. Its original name remains unknown. The variety was brought into wider recognition in the late 2000s thanks to tomato enthusiast Reinhart Kraft. It is highly valued for its combination of large fruit size and excellent flavor. In 2010, it was first mentioned in the Seed Savers Yearbook, which gave it recognition among collectors and rare tomato enthusiasts.
This is a mid-season, indeterminate variety with strong (height 1.5 m), vigorous plants that produce an abundance of fruit. It is distinguished by its high productivity and resistance to most tomato diseases. Fruits are large, weighing up to 600 g, round-flattened in shape, very meaty, dense, and not prone to cracking. Although their appearance is modest — pale, not very vivid skin color — their taste is outstanding. The tomatoes are sweet, with a harmonious balance of sugars and acidity, and have a rich, “homemade” flavor with fragrant flesh.
Thanks to these qualities, the variety is highly appreciated by those who love natural, richly flavored vegetables. The fruits are excellent for fresh consumption in salads, slicing, as well as for making thick sauces and juices due to their meaty texture and low seed content. Today, this variety is known and loved by many amateur gardeners across Europe.
