ALMAZ. One of the best-known and most popular mid-season eggplant varieties developed in Ukraine. Bred by plant breeder A. S. Andrievskyi at the Donetsk Experimental Station, the variety was officially registered in 1983. It is valued for its consistent yields, ease of cultivation and excellent fruit flavor. The plants are compact and medium-sized, reaching approximately 40–60 cm in height. The fruits are elongated and cylindrical, about 14–18 cm long, with smooth, glossy, deep purple skin. The average fruit weight is 100–165 g, although the eggplants can grow considerably larger under favorable conditions.
The flesh is greenish-white, firm and tender, without pronounced bitterness. The growing season lasts approximately 110–130 days. The variety is known for its good productivity and ability to tolerate short periods of drought. However, regular watering is necessary for healthy growth and proper fruit development. It is suitable for growing outdoors, under plastic covers and in greenhouses. The fruits are excellent for frying, stewing, baking, preserving and preparing a wide variety of vegetable dishes. Thanks to its proven reliability, pleasant flavor and versatility, ALMAZ remains a classic eggplant variety.
