CRIOLLA DE COCINA. A family heirloom from Nicaragua, this unique sweet pepper variety of medium maturity combines an exotic appearance with excellent flavor qualities. In open ground, the compact bush reaches about 50 cm in height and is abundantly covered with bright fruits. The fruits are thin-walled, small, about 10 cm long. As they ripen, their color changes from green to deep red. The surface is strongly wrinkled with a peculiar relief, resembling that of hot pepper varieties.
The taste is exceptionally sweet, without any heat. Average fruit weight is 50-80 g. At full maturity, the peppers become bright red, juicy, crunchy, and very aromatic. The variety is distinguished by a distinct fruity fragrance and rich flavor. Thanks to the thin walls, the fruits dry quickly, making them perfect for preparing fragrant paprika. They are also excellent fresh, in salads, baked, stuffed, or in other culinary creations.
YIELD AND MATURITY
The plant is unpretentious, producing well both in greenhouses and in open ground. Even without additional watering, bushes grow to 40-50 cm and produce a generous harvest – they look as if they are literally covered in fruit. This variety has an interesting history: it was discovered in 1988 by a farmer from Nicaragua and has since been passed down as a true family heirloom.
Its name translates as “Local Cuisine,” emphasizing its traditional use in the region’s national dishes. The fruits mature in about 80-90 days. Thanks to the combination of decorative appeal, high yield, and outstanding taste, this variety is rightly considered one of the most charming representatives of sweet peppers.
