FETTERMAN'S RED DEVILS. A historic family heirloom that has been preserved and grown by the Fetterman family for several generations in Garrard County, Kentucky, USA. This tomato combines time-tested reliability, excellent productivity, and large, meaty fruits of an unusual elongated plum shape. Thanks to its outstanding flavor and very small amount of seeds, it is deservedly considered one of the finest large-fruited varieties for fresh eating. A mid-season indeterminate variety with a vigorous, well-developed plant.
In open-ground cultivation, plants reach about 1.6 m (5.2 ft) in height. Strong stems easily support the weight of the large fruits. Each truss bears 4-5 tomatoes weighing 200-350 g. The variety produces stable, above-average yields throughout the season. The fruits are large, elongated plum-shaped with an attractive pointed tip, resembling small red peppers or tongues of flame. The smooth, even skin develops a rich bright-red color, free of green shoulders and highly resistant to cracking.
The fruits are uniform and have excellent market appeal. When sliced, they reveal dense, meaty, very juicy flesh with small seed cavities. There are very few seeds, so most of the fruit consists of thick, flavorful flesh. The texture is tender and buttery without excessive juice, making this variety especially enjoyable for fresh consumption. Large bright-red fruits, outstanding productivity, nearly seedless flesh, and an excellent balanced flavor make it worthy of a place among the finest large-fruited heirloom tomatoes.
FLAVOR
The flavor is rich, harmonious, and classically tomato-like. Natural sweetness blends beautifully with a light refreshing acidity, creating a perfectly balanced flavor profile. The flesh is extremely juicy, tender, and literally melts in the mouth, leaving a pleasant finish with delicate fruity notes. The fruits are ideal for fresh salads, vegetable platters, homemade sauces, juices, and general culinary use. Thanks to their dense flesh and small number of seeds, they are also excellent for roasting and preparing rich tomato dishes. Fetterman's Red Devils is a rare American family heirloom that has successfully stood the test of time.
