NOIRE DE CRIMEE, BLACK KRIM. This is a medium-height heirloom tomato variety. The fruits have a flat-round shape, are large in size, and very dark burgundy in color. The diameter of the fruits can reach up to 13 cm. In 2016, at a tomato festival in the USA, this variety was ranked in the “Top 10” for flavor among hundreds of varieties. The name of the variety comes from the Crimean Peninsula, where it has long been considered a family heirloom.
It is an early variety; the bush reaches up to 1.4 meters tall in open ground, with 2–4 fruits per cluster weighing between 350 and 450 grams. The fruit shape is flat-round, the color is purple with green “shoulders” near the stem, which is considered a delicacy trait. The flesh is meaty and juicy, with a rich, sweet-and-sour taste and excellent aroma.
In hot conditions, the fruits may develop a brownish tint. They are dense, durable, sweet, and aromatic with a slight tanginess. The flesh is moderately juicy and tasty. In America, the variety gained wide popularity among farmers and gardeners, especially in organic farms, due to its unique coloring and resistance to various growing conditions.
VARIETY HISTORY:
The "Black Krim" tomato (sometimes referred to as "Crimean Black" or "Black Krim" in English) is one of the popular dark-fruited (black) tomato varieties, known for its rich color, unique flavor, and aroma. This variety originates from the Crimean Peninsula, which explains its name.
It was developed by local farmers in Crimea before the early 20th century. It belongs to the group of so-called “black” tomatoes, which actually have a dark red or brownish-purple hue due to the high concentration of anthocyanins and other pigments. The variety became known outside of Crimea due to its taste qualities.
It was introduced to the USA and Europe in the early 1990s. In America, it gained popularity among farmers and gardeners, especially in organic farms, thanks to its unique color and adaptability to various growing conditions.
