GEORGE DETSIKA’S ITALIAN RED. This heirloom tomato variety was cultivated for 25 years by George Detsika and is considered a true family treasure. The seeds originally came from an Italian man who brought them from Italy in the early 20th century. Since then, the variety has been carefully preserved. The plant is indeterminate (tall-growing), reaching up to 1.8 meters in height.
The bush is strong and vigorous, with regular (non-potato) leaves and dense foliage. It requires staking and pruning and performs best when grown in 1-2 stems. It is a mid-season variety, but the fruits start ripening relatively early compared to other large-fruited tomatoes. Yields are high and consistent. Fruits are very large, most weighing between 400-800 grams, with some exceeding 1 kilogram.
VARIETY CHARACTERISTICS
The tomatoes have a round, slightly elongated shape with pronounced ribbing. Some resemble blunt hearts, while others have a classic beefsteak look. The skin is deep red without green shoulders. The flesh is incredibly meaty and juicy, with minimal seeds and small seed cavities. The flavor is outstanding: rich, sweet, and packed with that “old-fashioned” tomato taste that true tomato lovers seek.
The variety has a strong, full aroma of ripe tomato. The fruits are crack-resistant, store well, and are good for transportation, especially for such large tomatoes. Perfect for fresh eating, salads, sauces, and juices. Excellent raw — as a standalone snack or in summer appetizers. This variety is prized not only for its superb flavor and impressive size, but also for its heritage and disease resistance.
