SUGAR RUSH STRIPEY. A unique variety of hot pepper of the Capsicum baccatum species, rightfully considered one of the most beautiful and delicious in its group. This is a rare aberrant striped type discovered in 2015 by Tom Mott (USA) on a Sugar Rush Peach plantation. The author of the breeding direction is Chris Fowler (Wales). The variety quickly gained popularity due to its unusual appearance and outstanding taste qualities. The main feature is the variegated peach-colored fruits with bright red stripes and streaks. At biological maturity, the pods look simply fantastic: a warm peach background with contrasting stripes creates a decorative effect.
At the same time, the plant's foliage is ordinary, green, without signs of variegation, which makes the contrast with the fruits even more expressive. The fruits are of folded shape, juicy, crispy, with a pronounced sweet fruity flavor. The flavor is dominated by notes of peach and apricot, with light citrus undertones. The heat is perceived as a rich, sweet pungency with a spicy character. Bush height from 1 meter and above, can reach up to 1.8 m in a greenhouse.
VARIETY PROPERTIES
According to reviews from experts and gourmets, Sugar Rush Stripey is often called the best-tasting among peppers of the C. baccatum species. The heat ranges from 10,000 to 30,000 SHU on the Scoville scale — from moderate to confidently medium. This is a fairly hot pepper, but thanks to the pronounced sweetness and fruity profile, the heat is perceived harmoniously. The plant is powerful, branches actively. The yield is very high. The first branching with flowers forms already after the fourth pair of leaves, which is an unusual feature of the variety. The vegetation period is about 130 days when grown in open ground.
The variety is suitable for growing in greenhouses and open ground, and also grows successfully in containers from 7 liters on balconies and loggias. Ideal for fresh consumption, salads, sauces, and canning. Due to its bright appearance, it is often grown as an ornamental crop as well. It should be noted that the variety is not fully stabilized and can sometimes produce completely red fruits without stripes. To obtain the typical coloration, it is recommended to grow several plants. Sugar Rush Stripey is not just a pepper, but a true collector's gem: spectacular, high-yielding, and with an outstanding fruity flavor.
